The Showbiz Pops Orchestra (SPO) was formed in 2007 by Richard Ward-Roden and Stuart Calvert: two distinguished conductors long associated with the international world of musicals.

Stuart Calvert - Artistic Director & Musical Supervisor

Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia (Canada ), Stuart studied at the Columbus Boychoir School in Princeton, New Jersey and is a Graduate of Brandon University ( Manitoba, Canada ). As an accompanist he has played recitals in Canada, the USA, Great Britain, Denmark, Germany and Israel.

Since 1988, he has worked extensively in musical theatre. Among the shows for which he has been Musical Director / Associate or Assistant Musical Director are: Brigadoon, South Pacific, Chess, Les Miserables, Joseph, Sunset Boulevard, Martin Guerre, Show Boat, Singin in the Rain, Miss Saigon, Cats, Riverdance, The Producers, Chicago and more recently Joseph at the Adelphi Theatre, London.

Richard Ward-Roden - Conductor & Musical Director
Richard studied at the Royal Northern College of Music where he gained his Graduate and Post Graduate Diplomas in performance. He is an award-winning musician who has worked with many of the leading UK orchestras and made appearances on both BBC television and radio.  Richard has worked extensively in musical theatre in the West End on productions such as Cats, Joseph, Miss Saigon, Sunset Boulevard, Mack and Mabel, Beauty and the Beast, Oliver, Killing Rasputin and Les Miserables.

His Musical Director credits include: Carousel; Calamity Jane; Spend, Spend, Spend!; The Wizard of Oz and more recently Associate Conductor of Les Miserables at the Queens Theatre, London. Richard has also been appointed Associate Conductor of The Queen Elizabeth Symphony Orchestra.
